Pamplin lecture looks at American icons

(Portland, Ore.)-She's welcomed people to American shores for more than a century, but when did the Statue of Liberty achieve icon status? Social art historian Albert Boime will talk about "Inventing an American Icon: The Statue of Liberty" at Lewis & Clark College's Pamplin Society Distinguished Visiting Scholar lecture on Monday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m.

"Boime's research lets us go behind the scenes of national symbols, like the Statue of Liberty, to see how they achieved icon status," said Angie McGinnis, director of the Pamplin Society. "It is a timely topic for us to examine."

Boime, a professor of art history at the University of California at Los Angeles, earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University. He is one of the pioneers of social art history and has completed three volumes of a projected six-volume series on the subject. Boime's most recent book, "The Unveiling of the National Icons: A Plea for Patriotic Iconoclasm in a Nationalist Era," investigates how visible symbols in the U.S. are used for patriotic purposes.

Excerpt from the flyer on the lecture series:

"Historically, the sketch emerged as the aesthetic repository for creative energy and ideas. As a young scholar, exploring the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Albert Boime discovered the academic oil sketch and proposed a fresh way of understanding the Academy in the dynamic process of applying paint to canvas. Boime, who has written extensively on the Academy and French Painting in the 19th century, explores the intimate relationship among key revolutionary moments in French history, subversive new ideas and the process of sketching. He concludes with a penetrating evaluation of the historical and cultural contributions of the Academy to the development
of the sketch."
